Performing Arts

Music, Drama and Dance play a very special part in the life of all students at BSJ. They bring opportunity, awe, wonder and joy to everyone in the community. The enriching experiences and knowledge gained by our students will live with them for the rest of their lives.

Music is taught by specialist teachers as a compulsory subject to all students from Pre-School up to the end of KS 3 and is then available as an option choice at GCSE and IB levels. Singing at BSJ is strong with choral sessions in the Primary school and Year 8 singing classes. Drama is integrated into the Primary school curriculum and is taught by specialist teachers as a compulsory subject to all students in KS 2 and KS 3. It is then available as an option choice at GCSE and as Theatre at IB level. Dance is taught in the Primary school through enrichment and at KS 3 level.

Throughout the Primary School, great emphasis is placed on providing both informal and formal performance opportunities for the students. Class and year group assemblies often include performance which may be from class work or from choral sessions. In addition to these, musical theatre productions are staged each year by Year 1 and Year 2 in their classes, and by Year 4 and Year 6 in the Raffles Theatre. Primary enrichment classes lead to regular performances of the students’ work, including end of term performances to the Primary school. The Young Musician and Young Composer of the Year Competition is a celebration of the high quality of our students’ work. The fabulous BSJ World Theatre adds a very special dimension to these exciting performances.

Students in the Secondary School also have plenty of opportunity for performance. In addition to regular performances in their music and drama lessons, students in KS 3 are able to audition for the annual KS 3 production. Regular lunchtime concerts are staged for and by students and informal rehearsals take place at lunchtimes in the various music/drama classrooms. Musical performances include Christmas celebrations, the Christmas Concert, IB Recitals and the Music Experience weekends. Students taking Drama at IGCSE and IB Theatre are expected to take part in more formal productions during the year, exploring the opportunities which exist not only for acting, but also for the technical aspect of theatrical production as well. Dance is a growing area for the Performing Arts Faculty and students have had opportunities through a variety of performances, including ‘Have to Dance’ which highlights students from both the Primary and Secondary School. The BSJ World Theatre offers unparalleled exposure to the technical side of production, with its state of the art lighting and sound systems. Each year, the Secondary School stages a musical production, open by audition to all students. We also regularly stage performances in which students work alongside professional artists at the BSJ World Theatre.

Students are invited to attend a variety of different Performing Arts experiences including the FOBISIA Music Festival, FOBISIA Primary Performing Arts Carnival, FOBISIA Choral Festival, FOBISIA Drama, ISTA workshops, BSJ Gamelan Festival and the Performing Arts trip to Singapore. Other opportunities are presented for our groups to perform at venues throughout Jakarta and this year there is a special trip for the Choral students to New York.

Individual instrumental tuition is offered to all students from Years 3 to 13 by our resident team of 11 music tutors. Tuition is available as a weekly 25 minute lesson on the piano, all orchestral instruments, classical and electric guitar, percussion and voice. Currently, more than 400 students are receiving a weekly music lesson at the school.

Musical activities are well supported, with orchestras, choirs, small instrumental ensembles, the wind band and rock groups all rehearsing weekly. Opportunities are also provided for tuition and performance on our own full sets of Javanese Gamelan and Sumatran Drums.

BSJ is an examining centre for ABRSM exams, hosting an annual visit by an examiner. Each year, a large number of students take an ABRSM exam. Our students regularly achieve the highest marks in Jakarta and sometimes the whole of Indonesia at the various grade levels on their instrument.

The BSJ World Theatre is a fantastic facility which is aimed to give our students a rich cultural education whilst supporting our curriculum. With facilities second to none, we aim to attract and produce the best professional music, drama and dance to benefit our students and the School community as a whole.
