Sustainability at BSJ
Our Commitment
At British School Jakarta (BSJ), sustainability is a central pillar of our Strategic Plan and our 10-Year Sustainability Strategy. We recognise our profound responsibility to future generations and are dedicated to reducing our environmental impact while promoting sustainable practices across all aspects of school life. From modernising our campus infrastructure to embedding eco-literacy into our curriculum and community outreach, we are actively working to build a thriving, green environment for our students and staff.
Sustainable Campus & Infrastructure
Sustainability is built into the fabric of BSJ, from our infrastructure and resource systems to the habits and values we cultivate in our students. Our campus is designed to tread lightly, operate smartly, and inspire the next generation of environmental stewards.
Renewable Energy & Green Buildings
Our upcoming Middle Years Building, opening in August 2026, is designed using circular economy principles and will feature solar panels projected to offset approximately 77% of its annual energy consumption.
Energy & Water Efficiency
Building Management Systems, routine energy checks, and smart meter pilots help us monitor, optimise, and reduce our environmental footprint across campus operations.
Eco-Friendly Transportation
BSJ is actively transitioning towards electric vehicles while also encouraging greener mobility through bicycles, battery scooters, and a future EV charging station on campus.
Daily Operations & Zero-Waste Initiatives
Sustainability at BSJ extends beyond the classroom and into the everyday operations of our campus. Through collaborative initiatives, responsible resource management, and innovative partnerships, we are building a culture where small daily actions contribute to long-term environmental impact.
Zero-Waste Campaigns
In partnership with Waste4Change, BSJ has implemented comprehensive waste-sorting stations across campus for organic, inorganic, recyclable, and hazardous waste. Monthly waste reports are also shared through school digiboards to help educate and engage the wider community.
Circular Economy Partnerships
Working alongside Cheshire Homes, we are exploring innovative ways to repurpose cooked food waste from our kitchens into natural handwash and fertiliser — supporting a more circular and sustainable approach to waste management.
Sustainable Food Systems
Together with our canteen and café partners, we are reducing waste from utensils and packaging while promoting healthier, locally sourced, and more sustainable food choices for our community.
Air Quality & Environment
To support a safe and healthy learning environment, BSJ is deploying indoor and outdoor air quality monitoring systems across campus to better understand and improve environmental conditions for our community.
Student Leadership & Curriculum Integration
Sustainability at BSJ is not confined to a single classroom or programme. It is embedded into student leadership, everyday learning experiences, and hands-on projects that empower learners to become active contributors to a more sustainable future.
Community Partnerships & Service Learning
At BSJ, sustainability is deeply connected to people and community. Through long-term partnerships, outreach programmes, and service learning experiences, students are encouraged to engage meaningfully with the world around them and contribute to positive social impact.
