The Year 10 students recently returned from a transformative and deeply impactful Learning Without Walls expedition to Telunas Beach Resort, a remote island community in Indonesia’s Riau Archipelago. 

Surrounded by pristine rainforest, wide sandy beaches, intricate mangrove ecosystems and calm tropical seas, students immersed themselves in adventure, service, cultural exchange, the great outdoors and personal growth. Throughout the week, the cohort took part in a wide range of experiences, including raft building, jungle hikes, waterfall swims, deck jumping, fishing, village visits, cultural activities, kayaking and community service projects. 

Many reflected on stepping outside their comfort zones and discovering new strengths through teamwork and perseverance. Whether hiking through the rainforest, sleeping in hammocks during the optional overnight jungle camp, or taking part in unfamiliar cultural experiences, students consistently demonstrated adaptability, positivity, and an inspiring willingness to embrace new opportunities.

A particular highlight was the opportunity to work alongside local communities in Selat Mie and Tanjung Pelanduk. Students planned and delivered activities for local children, played games and sports, learned about village life, and experienced the immense warmth and hospitality of their hosts. Many commented on the joy of seeing children smile, the excitement of shared play and gifting equipment, the welcome of traditional dances and local food, and the meaningful connections that developed throughout the day. Students also reflected on a growing sense of gratitude, recognising both the similarities and differences between their own lives and those of the communities they visited.

Students experienced a four-day digital detox, spending time entirely away from phones and social media. Many reported feeling more present, more connected to their peers and surroundings, and better able to appreciate healthy habits, time outdoors, face-to-face relationships, and simply enjoying the moment. For many, the residential strengthened friendships, built confidence, and created opportunities to connect with people they may not normally spend time with during a busy school week.

Reflecting on the experience, Trip Leader Ms Cathy Williams said, “What stood out most was the way students embraced every opportunity, whether that was taking on a physical challenge, connecting with local communities or stepping away from technology. Throughout the week, they demonstrated resilience, kindness and a genuine willingness to support one another, which helped create a positive environment where everyone could learn and grow.”

The final night beach celebration included pizza making, a bonfire, music, stargazing and opportunities to share highlights, challenges and gratitude from the week. For many students, these quieter moments of reflection, laughter and friendship became lasting highlights of the week.

The Learning Without Walls programme in Telunas has provided students with opportunities to challenge themselves, develop new perspectives and build meaningful connections with both their peers and the wider community, experiences that will continue to shape their learning beyond the classroom.
