British School Jakarta’s Year 9 students recently embarked on an unforgettable Learning Without Walls residential trip to Bali, where they challenged themselves through adventure, cultural immersion, and teamwork while developing valuable life skills beyond the classroom.

Set amidst Bali's natural beauty, students stayed in eco-friendly bamboo cottages surrounded by lush landscapes. The unique accommodation provided an opportunity to step away from their usual routines, connect with nature, and experience a different way of living.

Throughout the week, students participated in a range of activities designed to encourage resilience, collaboration, and personal growth. One of the highlights was Mepantigan, a traditional Balinese mud activity that combined elements of wrestling, games, and teamwork. Students also deepened their understanding of local traditions through cultural learning experiences and a natural dye workshop, where they explored sustainable techniques and Balinese craftsmanship.

The adventure culminated with an early morning trek up Mount Batur. The challenging hike tested students' physical and mental endurance, requiring determination, perseverance, and mutual support. Along the way, students encouraged one another to keep going, demonstrating the strong sense of community that developed throughout the trip. Reaching the summit and witnessing the spectacular sunrise over Bali was a rewarding moment that made the effort worthwhile.

Reflecting on the experience, Mr Randolph Lee, the trip leader shared, "The Bali residential provided students with opportunities to step outside their comfort zones, embrace new experiences, and support one another through challenges. It was wonderful to see their resilience, teamwork, and confidence grow throughout the week."

Most importantly, every student completed the programme safely while gaining a deeper appreciation for Balinese culture, the natural environment, and their own capabilities.
