Preparing for Success, Life Beyond School
At British School Jakarta (BSJ), our aim is not only to help students gain entry to leading universities around the world, but to ensure they are prepared to thrive once they arrive there.
In Years 12 and 13, students study the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP), one of the world’s most respected pre-university qualifications. Recognised by universities globally, the programme is known for its academic rigour and its focus on developing thoughtful, independent learners.
Students follow a balanced course of study across six subject groups while also completing the three core elements of the Diploma Programme: Theory of Knowledge (TOK), the Extended Essay, and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS).
These experiences encourage students to think deeply, undertake sustained independent research, and contribute meaningfully to their communities. The Extended Essay, for example, requires students to design and complete a 4,000-word research project — an experience that closely mirrors the type of academic work expected during the first years of university study.
Universities increasingly value students who arrive not only with strong academic results, but also with the ability to think critically, manage complex workloads, and work independently. The structure of the IB Diploma Programme develops these qualities deliberately, combining academic breadth with opportunities for deep inquiry, reflection and independent study.
At BSJ, this academic challenge sits within a culture that places equal importance on wellbeing. Students are supported to develop the resilience, balance and self-management needed to navigate demanding academic work while maintaining a healthy and purposeful approach to learning and life.
Our alumni frequently reflect on the advantage this preparation gives them when they arrive at university. Many note that the independence, organisation and intellectual discipline developed during the Diploma Programme at BSJ allowed them to adapt quickly to the expectations of higher education.
Each year graduates go on to universities across the world. Recent cohorts have continued their studies in the United States, the United Kingdom, across Europe, Asia and Australia. More importantly, they leave BSJ with the confidence, perspective and independence needed to flourish once they are there.
The Diploma Programme represents the culmination of the BSJ journey - a programme that balances academic ambition with personal development, preparing students not only for university, but for the opportunities and responsibilities that follow.
Our Curriculum
Wellbeing at the Heart of Everything
At BSJ, wellbeing is intentionally woven into the everyday experience of learning. Rather than sitting alongside learning as a separate programme only, it is explicitly and implicitly embedded in the way we design learning, shape environments and nurture relationships within our school community.
Students develop the knowledge, skills and dispositions that support their wellbeing through meaningful learning experiences, strong relationships and opportunities to grow in confidence and independence. Through this approach, students learn to understand themselves and others, build healthy relationships and develop the resilience and agency needed to navigate challenges and opportunities.
Our learning environments are intentionally designed to support both wellbeing and academic growth. Students are encouraged to be curious, to take ownership of their learning and to contribute meaningfully to the community around them. When students feel safe, connected and valued, they are more willing to take risks in their learning and pursue deeper understanding.
Through this integrated approach, wellbeing and learning strengthen one another. Students develop not only the knowledge and capabilities to succeed academically, but also the confidence, adaptability and sense of purpose that enable them to thrive in school and beyond.
