At BSJ Primary, children learn through inquiry, where curiosity drives deep understanding and meaningful learning. Our teaching is guided by a bespoke Primary curriculum, based on the English National Curriculum for English and Mathematics and the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) for subjects such as Geography, History, Science, Art and Design & Technology. This approach ensures strong foundations in core skills while allowing children to explore big ideas that matter through connected and hands-on learning experiences.

Children are also fortunate to be taught by specialist teachers in Physical and Health Education, Drama, Music and Indonesian Studies. As our host country, Indonesia plays an important role in school life, with language, culture and traditions thoughtfully woven into learning and community experiences.

Key Stage One, Years One and Two, marks an important bridge between the play-based foundations of Kindergarten and the increasing rigour of Primary learning. At this stage, we take a balanced approach that honours children’s natural curiosity while gradually introducing the structure and expectations of our bespoke BSJ curriculum.

Learning is carefully designed to be engaging, purposeful and developmentally appropriate, blending curiosity-led learning, talk, creativity and play with explicit teaching of key skills in literacy, mathematics and beyond. Through meaningful contexts and hands-on experiences, children build confidence, independence and a love of learning, while developing the academic foundations they need to thrive as they progress through Primary school.

Overall, throughout the Primary Years 1-6,  and by nurturing our children to have voice, choice and responsibility in their learning, we develop confident, independent learners who think deeply, collaborate effectively and reflect on their progress, supported every step of the way by caring teachers. 

Our Learning Diversity, Wellbeing and English as an Additional Language (EAL) teams work closely together to ensure every child receives the support they need to succeed. For students that require it, dedicated EAL and Learning Diversity specialists provide tailored support based on individual needs, including our EAL Academy, where children are assessed on entry and may receive short-term, intensive support outside the classroom for part of the day. This targeted approach helps children make rapid progress and confidently access the curriculum. Alongside this, some children receive in-class support, carefully matched to their needs, ensuring all learners are supported, challenged and equipped to flourish.

At BSJ (British School Jakarta), we ensure every student feels at home, regardless of their starting point with English. Our specialised programs are designed to build confidence and academic success in a warm, inclusive environment. Depending on your child’s prior experience, they will join either the EAL Academy to build a strong foundation in core skills or our EAL Movers group for targeted support in accessing the full curriculum.
