BSJ Arts Programme
Through our Arts Programme, we aim to inspire creativity, foster artistic skills, and promote a lifelong appreciation for the Arts among our students beyond the classroom. By providing diverse opportunities for artistic expression and engagement, we strive to nurture the artistic talents and passions of our students.
The Arts programme is an integral part of both the formal academic curriculum and a diverse extracurricular program. This comprehensive programme provides BSJ students with a platform to explore their passion for the Arts through various expressive mediums, including Visual Arts, Media Arts, Theatre and Music.
Primary Arts
Arts Programme for Kindergarten
From an early age, art and music have a positive impact on children's language skills. Through art, children develop the ability to hear and pronounce words and sentences effectively. Playing a musical instrument enhances their motor skills and ear sensitivity, fostering multi-sensory coordination. Additionally, both playing and listening to music can uplift a person's mood.
Furthermore, when music is combined with movement to create a dance routine, it provides even more benefits by integrating children's physical, motor, cognitive, linguistic, social, and emotional aspects.
The kindergarten serves as the foundation for future learning, where students develop social skills, independence, and resilience in preparation for their educational journey.
At British School Jakarta (BSJ), we embrace a holistic educational approach, ensuring that students receive exposure to specific areas such as Expressive Arts and Design in Kindergarten.
Arts Programme for Primary School
Art is seamlessly integrated into the British School Jakarta (BSJ) Primary School curriculum, specifically within our 'Explore' framework. This approach promotes cross-curricular, thematic, and rigorous teaching, ensuring a well-rounded educational experience.
Our dedicated art specialists guide students through their artistic exploration, connecting these experiences to broader themes. This seamless integration allows students to express themselves creatively, refine visual communication skills, and explore various artistic techniques and media.
As students progress, they continue to build upon their artistic skills, forging connections with academic themes. Art is a powerful tool that encourages creativity and critical thinking, enabling our students to communicate their ideas visually.
Throughout their journey, students are provided with multiple opportunities to showcase their talents in art exhibitions and school presentations, aligning with our commitment to fostering creativity and artistic expression in a culturally diverse environment.
Secondary Arts
British School Jakarta (BSJ) provides a diverse range of Arts subjects for Secondary School students, including Drama, Music, Visual Art, and Media.
In the Middle Years Programme 1-2 (Year 7 & 8), students explore all subjects as individual disciplines, allowing them to discover their interests and build upon their Primary School learning. The curriculum emphasises concept-based inquiry models, enabling students to carve their paths as artists through independent inquiries. Collaboration is fostered as students learn to question, think, create, and reflect together through effective communication and negotiation.
During MYP 3 (Year 9), students choose two of the five Arts subjects to study in-depth, immersing themselves more fully in their areas of passion.
In MYP 4 (Year 10) and MYP 5 (Year 11), the Arts subjects become discrete academic subjects that incorporate creativity, theory, praxis, and reflection.
At the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma level (Years 12 and 13), BSJ offers Music, Theatre, Visual Art, and Film. These courses are designed to empower students to become independent artists, supported by teachers who act as mentors and guides. Students have significant control over their assessment projects, allowing them to take ownership of their chosen course. Notably, there are no exams in any of these courses, giving students the freedom to navigate their artistic journey.
The Arts Programme at BSJ encourages students to explore their passions, develop their artistic skills, and take the lead in their artistic pursuits. The curriculum fosters creativity, critical thinking, self-expression, and personal growth, empowering students to become confident and independent artists.Theatre (Drama)
