World Languages

At BSJ, we believe that a language will equip our students with the ability to communicate in an increasingly global community whilst providing an insight into different cultural backgrounds. As such, a range of languages are offered: French, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, Indonesian and Korean. All students are taught languages in mixed ability groups, apart from Indonesian and Chinese Mandarin, which are set by language proficiency. 

In addition, we also offer English as an Additional Language courses which are tailored for the English language acquisition of students new to the school and who are in need of extra support in order to access the curriculum in English. This includes withdrawal English language lessons, in-class support, and additional options for English at IGCSE and IB Levels.

Primary Level: Students select one language (French, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese) and study Indonesian.

IB MYP Level: Students are expected to continue with their options from Primary. Therefore they study one language (French, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese) and Indonesian. Korean First Language becomes an additional option in Year 7.

IGCSE Level: Students select one language from the two languages that they studied at IB MYP Level. French, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese are offered for non-natives. Indonesian may be studied as Native or Non-Native. Korean First Language is offered to Native speakers.

IBDP Level: Students have three possibilities in Languages.

Language A: This course is for students who demonstrate a high level of ability in the language. This course is available in Indonesian and Korean.

Language B: This course is for students who have already studied the subject for a certain amount of time, generally to IGCSE Level. This course is available in French, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese and Indonesian.

Language Ab Initio: This course is for students who have no experience of the language. This course is offered in French and Spanish.
