The Aim of Physical Education
“Intelligence and skill can only function at the peak of their capacity when the body is healthy and strong.”
John F. Kennedy
The aim of Physical Education is to provide learning opportunities for individuals in a broad range of enjoyable, demanding and rewarding challenges. Through this, physical skills, knowledge and understanding of the wider issues of sport, social skills, concepts of leadership and teamwork as well as self-esteem and confidence can be developed.
Although primarily concerned with physical capabilities and performance, Physical Education should also provide opportunities for planning and reflection as vital components of the learning process for all students.
Additionally the development of personal skills, cooperation, empathy and collaboration within a variety of social situations should be enhanced by participating in an appropriately designed Physical Education programme.
Physical Education can make a unique contribution to the holistic education of the individual, a process that will start early in life and which should continue to provide and encourage a healthy and active lifestyle in adulthood.
“The game is never more important than the people you play with.”
Debra Demaline Maxted
We embrace the concepts of “sport for all” as well as elitism for those students excelling in a particular sport. In P.E. lessons students participate in a carousel of diverse activities including football, basketball, athletics, badminton, rugby/touch, volleyball, softball/cricket, dance, fitness and swimming. These are further enhanced with the provision of, for example, gymnastics and taekwondo as options within a highly comprehensive activities programme taking place both in the evenings and at weekends.
Our students participate in a wide range of competitive sporting events both within Jakarta and internationally. These include a range of sports within the Jakarta Association of Athletics Competitions, the Jakarta Football Sports Association, the Federation of British International Schools in Asia and the S.E. Asia Schools Association Competitions.
