Individuals & Societies
Individuals and Societies is taught as an integrated subject in Years 7 and 8. In subsequent years subjects taught include Geography, History, Economics, Business Studies, Global Politics, Global Perspectives, Psychology and Indonesian Studies.
Geography is concerned with the study of places, the inter-relationships between the human and physical processes which shape them and the people who live in them. It helps make sense of their surroundings and the wider world in which we now live.
History chronicles, investigates and interprets the past. Studying History develops an awareness of the human condition, an appreciation of how human affairs have changed through the past and a sensitivity to how people responded and lived through events in the past.
All students study both Geography and History in Year 9, and both are elective subjects at IGCSE and within the IB Diploma. In both subjects the aim is to develop academic skills appropriate to the individual subject areas and develop these within the context of local, national and world affairs.
Economics is offered at IGCSE and IB. At the core of Economics is the search for a better understanding of the workings of human society through studies of micro and macro-economics.
Business courses are offered at IGCSE, IBDP and BTEC levels. Our business courses study the ways and means in which individuals and groups interact in a dynamic business environment. They examine how business decisions are made and how these decisions make an impact on internal and external environments.
Psychology is offered at IBDP level. The psychology course examines the interaction of biological, cognitive and sociocultural influences on human behaviour.
Global Perspectives is offered at IGCSE and Global Politics at IBDP. The courses explore fundamental political concepts such as power, equality, sustainability, and peace in a range of contexts and at a variety of levels.
Indonesian Studies is a subject given to students of nationalities other than Indonesian which is aimed at getting students to know more broadly about Indonesia in terms of geography, history and culture. The beautifully decorated Indonesian Studies’ classrooms are specifically designed to stimulate the students’ interest in learning about their host country, Indonesia.
Social Science is not simply about studying these subjects in the classroom. We believe it is important that students apply what they have learnt to understanding the modern world around them. To this end, our dynamic Social Sciences Faculty have organised a range of very successful and exciting events. For example, our students participate in National History Day, an international event which offers the opportunity for our successful competitors to travel regionally in Southeast Asia for semifinals, and then to the University of Maryland, Washington, to participate in the worldwide finals. Additionally, the Geography department runs an extensive program of field trips for KS3, IGCSE and IBDP students.
