IB Middle Years Programme

The IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) is an exciting curriculum framework for students aged 11  to 16. It provides a framework for learning that encourages students to become creative, critical and reflective thinkers.

The IB MYP emphasises intellectual challenge, encouraging students to make connections between their studies in traditional subjects and the real world. It fosters the development of skills for communication, intercultural understanding and global engagement—essential qualities for young people who are becoming global leaders.

It builds upon the knowledge, skills and attitudes developed in the primary school and prepares students to meet the academic challenges of the IB Diploma Programme (DP) and the IB Career-related Programme (CP).

The IB MYP holistically addresses students’ intellectual, social, emotional and physical well-being, giving opportunities for students to navigate through their adolescence in an informed manner. It provides students with opportunities to develop the knowledge, attitudes and skills they need in order to manage complexity and take responsible action for the future. It ensures breadth and depth of understanding through study in eight subject groups and it requires the study of at least two languages (language of instruction and additional language of choice) to support students in understanding their own cultures and those of others.

Service as Action in the IB Middle Years Programme

The IB MYP empowers students to participate in service within the community. Our students take part in the BSJ Service as Action programme throughout MYP 1-3 where they experience the value of community work in the residential trips they take and in the work they do with the different organisations with which our school is involved.

The BSJ Service as Action programme culminates in MYP 3 with the community project.  The community project focuses on community and service, encouraging students to explore their right and responsibility to implement service as action in the community. The community project gives students an opportunity to develop awareness of needs in various communities and address those needs through service learning. As a consolidation of learning, the community project engages in a sustained, in-depth inquiry leading to service as action in the community.

With the IB MYP and Wellbeing programmes, we aim to support students as they navigate through their formative years. Our goal is to help them understand their role in the systems they contribute to and the impact they can have on these systems. We aim to develop compassionate integrity in our learners thus preparing them for a lifetime of learning as compassionate global citizens.

The IB Middle Years Programme is a programme that sparks curiosity, shapes compassionate systems thinkers and nurtures a love for lifelong learning.
