Primary School Curriculum: Years 1 to 6

The primary school programme at British School Jakarta (BSJ) combines the English National Curriculum (ENC) with an innovative, inquiry-based learning approach. Designed for students in Years 1 to 6, this elementary school programme balances academic rigor with creativity, curiosity, and hands-on experiences that prepare learners for lifelong success.

English Curriculum

Our English curriculum follows the English National Curriculum and focuses on developing confident communicators and critical thinkers. Students engage in reading, writing, oracy, and listening through programmes such as Talk 4 Writing, which emphasises storytelling and language fluency.

The English curriculum covers:

  • Writing (including handwriting, phonics, and spelling)
  • Reading
  • Oracy (speaking)
  • Listening
  • Talk 4 Writing Programme

For children requiring additional support, BSJ offers English as an Additional Language (EAL) to ensure all learners can participate fully in every aspect of school life.

Maths Curriculum

BSJ’s Maths curriculum is structured around different strands of Mathematics, such as:

  • Numbers
  • Measures
  • Geometry
  • Statistics
  • Reasoning

Our focus is on developing mastery in Maths with an emphasis on speed and efficiency, reasoning skills, the ability to explain strategies, and accuracy, all with links to real-life applications. By connecting numbers to everyday experiences, they develop both competence and confidence.

“Explore”

Beyond English and Maths, BSJ’s “Explore” framework opens a world of discovery across Science, History, Geography, Art, Design Technology, Society, and Digital Literacy, all taught through an inquiry-based approach. We encourage children to investigate topics deeply and make meaningful connections across disciplines.

Departing from traditional models like the IPC, BSJ’s Explore curriculum allows for dynamic, student-led inquiry. Learners ask questions, test ideas, and pursue their interests, thus gaining independence and curiosity. This not only enhances academic achievement but also develops essential life skills such as collaboration, problem-solving, and creativity.

By combining the structure of the ENC with the flexibility of exploratory learning, BSJ ensures a seamless transition from primary to secondary or IB Diploma, equipping them for future success.

Our sprawling facilities foster both health and holistic growth, allowing children to explore their passions beyond the classroom.

Language Programmes

Recognising the importance of communication in an international setting, BSJ provides a comprehensive English as an Additional Language (EAL) programme for non-native speakers. Students are assessed upon entry and in their first few weeks to determine their English proficiency. Based on results, they receive personalised support across three levels:

  1. New to English (NTE)
  2. Early Acquisition (EA)
  3. Developing Confidence (DC)

Support may include one-on-one lessons, small group sessions, or in-class assistance. Regular assessments ensure each student progresses steadily toward full English fluency and academic success.

Co-Curricular Activities

BSJ offers over 260 extracurricular activities, encouraging students to pursue their interests and build life skills beyond academics. From sports and performing arts to robotics, debate, and community service, every student can find something that inspires them.

“Discover” Programme

Innovation meets imagination in BSJ’s “Discover” Programme, a new, child-centred approach designed for students from Year 1 to Year 6. This forward-thinking framework goes beyond traditional classroom instruction, giving students ownership of their learning.

The Discover Programme features mixed-age groupings from as young as early years school, where students aged 5 to 11 collaborate and learn from one another. This environment encourages cooperation, peer mentoring, and self-directed exploration.

As Jo Osman explains, “Our values and mission are at the heart of everything we do at BSJ. We are committed to providing a safe, nurturing, and inclusive learning environment that promotes academic excellence, creativity, and global citizenship.”

At BSJ, education isn’t confined to textbooks. It’s an immersive, joyful experience that helps students find their voice, develop their talents, and build friendships that last a lifetime.
