The Art of Change: BSJ Term 1 Arts Showcase
On Thursday, 2 October, our BSJ community enjoyed an explosion of colour, sound, and imagination as over 200 BSJ students took to the BSJ Raffles Theatre stage and gallery for Term 1 Arts Showcase: The Art of Change.
The event marked an initial exploration of the Arts Faculty’s unifying theme for the academic year: CHANGE — one of the four key concepts in the MYP Arts curriculum, alongside Identity, Communication, and Creativity. The theme invited students to reflect on transformation in themselves, their relationships, and the world around them.
“One of the reasons we chose ‘Change’ as the theme was to help both students and parents gain a deeper understanding of this important MYP Arts concept,” shared Stephen Tomlinson, Faculty Leader of the Arts at BSJ. “This showcase brings together Theatre, Music, Visual Arts, Media Arts, and Film — celebrating how our students interpret and express this idea in their own creative ways.”
Students presented a diverse mix of performance and artwork, ranging from heartfelt drama to eye-catching multimedia installations. Each piece capturing their imagination, reflection, and growing confidence as young artists.
Primary students also joined through the event, highlighting the spirit of artistic continuity across BSJ. “It’s wonderful to see our young artists, actors, and musicians coming together,” Stephen added. “The event shows how the arts connect disciplines, ages, and perspectives through the shared language of creativity.”
For many, the showcase was not just a display of talent, but a reflection on how art evolves, and how creativity itself is a process of transformation.
“I really enjoyed playing Lord of the Dance in the orchestra during the Arts Showcase,” said Alex, a Year 8 student. “It was so much fun being conducted by Pak Nino — his energy and expressions made the whole performance more exciting and helped us play our best!” Claire, a BSJ parent, shared a similar sentiment: “It was such an enjoyable show! I especially liked the variety of arts on display — from theatre performances to students talking about their artwork. It was also great to see students from all parts of the school taking part in the event.”
The evening concluded with a burst of applause and admiration for the students’ creativity and effort, leaving the audience inspired for what’s to come in the next showcase.
At BSJ, the arts are a vital part of our students’ learning journey as it helps to foster confidence, creativity, and empathy. Through the arts, our students can grow, ready to thrive both inside and beyond the classroom.
