BSJ Student Advocate for Mangrove Conservation and Youth Environmental Action

Park Kyungmin, British School Jakarta

Kyung Min, a Year 11 student at British School Jakarta, is helping to raise awareness about environmental conservation through youth advocacy and community partnerships. His growing involvement in mangrove protection and coastal sustainability has recently been featured in regional media, highlighting the role young people can play in protecting Indonesia’s ecosystems.

Kyung Min’s environmental journey began with a personal commitment to increase public awareness about mangroves — a vital part of Indonesia’s coastal environment that supports biodiversity, protects shorelines, and absorbs carbon emissions. “My goal is to grow awareness about mangroves and the environment,” he shared. “Through digital platforms, I want to show that young people can contribute to conservation.”

His work expanded when he joined Indonesia Biru Foundation (IBF), a non-profit organisation focused on marine and terrestrial conservation. Recognising his passion and leadership, IBF appointed him as a Youth Ambassador, where he encouraged other young people to take an active role in protecting coastal ecosystems and promoting sustainable practices.

Kyung Min has also supported efforts to build meaningful partnerships between environmental organisations and industry leaders. During a recent collaboration event with the Association of Korean Contractors in Indonesia (AKCI), he helped connect communities and encourage dialogue around responsible development and ecosystem restoration. The partnership secured funding commitments to support mangrove rehabilitation, waste management initiatives, and educational eco-tourism programmes in Lombok.

Reflecting on the experience, Kyungmin emphasised the importance of collaboration. “Environmental action requires cooperation that goes beyond borders,” he said. “Everyone has a role to play in protecting our planet.”

The British School Jakarta is proud to see students like Kyung Min turn learning into meaningful action beyond the classroom. His work reflects BSJ’s commitment to nurturing globally minded learners who demonstrate curiosity, compassion, and a desire to make a positive difference within their communities and the wider world.
