BSJ Physical Wellbeing Parent Series
On Friday, 12 September, British School Jakarta (BSJ) launched its 2025-26 Wellbeing Parent Series, a monthly programme dedicated to exploring different elements of wellbeing and how parents can best support their children’s development. The first session focused on Physical Wellbeing, with a session by Dr. Justin Griggs on the topic: Creating an Optimal Environment for Sports Motivation.
Held in BSJ Dickens Library, more than 80 parents joined the session to explore how to support and nurture healthy motivation in their children, both in the world of sport and life. Through the presentation Dr. Griggs guided parents through the many “flavours” of motivation, from external drivers, such as rewards, pressure, or expectations, to deeper intrinsic factors like enjoyment, personal values, and identity. Through interactive activities, parents were encouraged to reflect on their own sources of motivation and consider how these influences best shape their children’s experiences in sport.
A key focus of the presentation was Self-Determination Theory, which highlights three essential psychological needs for lasting motivation: competence, autonomy, and relatedness. Dr. Griggs shared practical strategies for families, such as encouraging independence through small responsibilities, striking a balance between involvement and freedom, and providing emotional support that validates effort rather than applying pressure. These approaches, he explains,“not only help to keep children engaged in sport but also build resilience, confidence, and a sense of belonging that carries into academics and other areas of life.”
For many parents, the session provided valuable reassurance and practical takeaways. BSJ parent Mrs Murch, shared: “I attended the session to learn more about the effect of sports on children with enjoyment, wellbeing, and motivation to continue. As a family, we are keen to encourage a lifetime enjoyment of sport. The talk touched on things I’ve been worrying about, especially as my children get older, about how to keep it fun while also motivating them to keep trying and improving. I also appreciate the opportunity to meet the Academy coaches for a discussion, and appreciate their involvement.”
BSJ Head of Wellbeing, Andrea Downie added: "Ten decades of research and a review of 24/7 scientific measures has shown that physical health (health, vitality, energy, sleep, physical wellbeing, mobility, nutrition, exercise, physical fitness and the absence of pain and illness) tops the core ingredients of flourishing right next to relationships".
To conclude the session parents had the chance to connect with BSJ’s dedicated sports coaches: Martin Vögel (Swim), Steve Jackson & Joe Hardy (MCFC), and Joan Valls (Tennis). This Meet the Coaches segment, provided a valuable opportunity to learn more about BSJ’s sports programmes and how each coach supports student development on and off the field.
The Wellbeing Parent Series reflects BSJ’s ongoing commitment to nurturing wholebeing of every child. By equipping parents with knowledge and strategies, the school seeks to strengthen the home-school partnership and promote a balanced, supportive environment for students. With upcoming sessions covering different aspects of wellbeing each month, BSJ looks forward to continuing these important conversations with the parent community!
