Echoes of Grief: A BSJ’s Year 12 DP Theatre Students Debut

On Monday, 27th October 2025, Year 12 DP Theatre’s first ensemble production, Echoes of Grief, drew an encouraging crowd of classmates, teachers, and families to the Wallace Theatre. The play, which was entirely student-led, showcased their artistic development as well as the collaborative spirit at the core of the DP Theatre experience, from writing and directing to choreography and design.
With well-known musical pieces that enhanced the story's emotional flow, Echoes of Grief delves into themes of love, sorrow, and healing. The students' artistic ability and strong dedication to teamwork were both on display in the performance.
As part of their Collaborative Project, a key DP Theatre assessment, Nicole, Jiya, Rosabelle and falisha were required to devise an original piece inspired by a chosen style or theorist. This showcase served as a mock exam, giving them hands-on experience in the full creative process.
What made this performance truly exceptional was the ownership the students demonstrated from start to finish. From an original script, choreographed dance numbers, crafted harmonies, directed scenes, and even how they shaped the visual identity of the production, they showed their artistic talents throughout. Working closely with the Theatre Tech team, they explored design elements such as lighting, silhouettes using a gauze, and vibrant set pieces to elevate the storytelling.
The result was a thoughtful and heartfelt performance, anchored by four outstanding actors whose monologues and vocals captivated the audience. It was a remarkable first step into the world of DP Theatre—filled with courage, artistry, and a clear passion for the craft.
Following the performance, the students invited the audience to offer feedback, which will support their written exam component and further refine their creative approach.
We are incredibly proud of the Year 12 DP Theatre cohort for their hard work and artistry. Echoes of Grief is just the beginning, and we cannot wait to see where their talent takes them next.
