Music in the Primary School

In the primary phase of school at British School Jakarta (BSJ), all students receive one hour of practical music-making and learning each week. This is led by specialist Music Curriculum teachers in our well-equipped primary Music classrooms.

For children in Kindergarten, Year 1, and Year 2, the focus is on developing musical skills and learning about different elements of music. They explore a range of tuned and untuned percussion instruments, discovering how these elements can be combined and manipulated to create various effects. Movement to Music activities enhance their understanding of instructions, sequencing, and fine and gross motor skill development.

In Year 3, children are introduced to orchestral instruments. They have the opportunity to try different instruments and make informed decisions about continuing instrumental learning from the second term onward. Learning an orchestral instrument is voluntary and offered in addition to their regular music lessons. During terms 2 and 3, Year 3 students explore music making as a whole class and in smaller groups using descant recorders, keyboards, and ukuleles.

Year 4 students participate in our Wider Opportunities Programme, where they learn to play a woodwind or brass instrument. Through this instrument, they deepen their understanding of musical elements, particularly timbre and texture. They apply this knowledge to create compositions and arrangements as a class and in smaller groups.

In Years 5 and 6, students further develop their skills in guitar, keyboard, and ukulele angklung. They work on creating, arranging, and performing music, integrating other instruments they may play as they form class and group orchestras and bands.

Singing plays a prominent role throughout the school, with carefully selected songs that enhance language understanding, listening skills, and articulation.

Music lessons extend beyond music learning alone. They aim to develop fine and gross motor skills, language and communication skills, mathematical skills, self-regulation, and social cohesion.

Students have numerous performance opportunities, including weekly assemblies, talent shows, recitals, and our annual Primary School Music Concert. They can also participate in year-group musicals in collaboration with Drama.

Lunchtime activities and enrichment opportunities are available, including instrument and ability-specific music ensembles such as wind bands, orchestras, and guitar ensembles. The choir is a popular lunchtime group that often performs in assemblies and other school events.

Primary Music at BS is an enriching and integral part of our students' educational journey. Join us and discover the joy and benefits of music education!
